    1. Introduction

    The lean startup methodology introduced the minimum viable product as a construct for accelerating validated learning. In the decade and a half since Eric Ries formalized the concept, it has been almost universally adopted in startup discourse — and almost universally misapplied in practice.

    The misapplication follows a predictable pattern. A founder identifies a market problem, develops a vision for the solution, and begins building. Over the course of months, features accumulate. "We need user accounts." "We need email notifications." "The dashboard needs to show historical data." Each addition seems individually justified. Collectively, they transform a six-week build into a nine-month build, consuming capital, deferring market feedback, and increasing the probability that the product will launch into a market that has moved.

    The antidote is not discipline in the vague, motivational sense. It is a structured methodology for defining, protecting, and executing a minimum feature set — one that treats the MVP as a scientific instrument rather than a junior product.


    2. The Single Hypothesis Principle

    Every MVP must be built to test a single, falsifiable market hypothesis. Not three hypotheses, not a hypothesis cluster — one hypothesis. This constraint is the load-bearing structure of disciplined MVP development.

    A well-formed hypothesis takes the form: If we build [specific capability], then [specific user segment] will [specific measurable behavior] because [specific mechanism]. The specificity of each element is what makes the hypothesis falsifiable, and falsifiability is what makes the test meaningful.

    4. Governance Against Scope Creep

    Scope creep does not arrive as a single catastrophic decision. It arrives as a sequence of individually reasonable-sounding additions, each of which seems too small to fight about. The product works correctly within its defined scope. It simply does not do everything the founder imagines the full product should eventually do.
